Blurred boundaries between man and machine

Whenever the name of Steven Spielberg is involved in a production, it is expected that the film in question is a great champion, box office, good reviews and reviews or both. There is no alternative to the prodigious filmmaker, who carries on his resume, since it began to glow intensely was back in 1970, such hits as "Jaws," "Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind," "ET," "Raiders of the Lost Ark "" The Color Purple, "" Schindler's List "and" Jurassic Park "among others. But, like any normal human being, from time to time, production or direction of some failures arise Spielberg (who remembers "1941", "Beyond Eternity" or "The Empire of the Sun").

In 2001, the worldwide film market was shaken by the statement that Spielberg was working on a project that originally belonged to another great filmmaker, Stanley Kubrick (The Shining, Barry Lyndon, "" Dr. Strangelove, "" Spartacus " "Born to Kill", ...). And best of all, with the blessings of Kubrick, who believed that the one who could take the project in question would be Spielberg himself. That movie was "AI - Artificial Intelligence."

The times we live in, marked by projects such as cloning, the investment in the emergence of machines that are able to "think" for themselves, biotechnology and genetic modification of foods and other major changes proposed by science, has opened possibilities for the dreams to become even bigger and that the creation of "replicants" (robots that are perfect copies of humans) provided the film "Blade Runner" Ridley Scott's return to the surface.

"AI - Artificial Intelligence" works this theme. During the period in question, these beings have become so common among us that would not cause more astonishment or admiration. Although very similar to what we are, we would be able to differentiate them from the human species without major difficulties, mainly due to the difficulty of making robots (for more that look physically with men, women and children) voice their feelings (suffering, love, have pain, cry or laugh naturally).

"AI" revolves around the character David Swinton, lived by the great actor Haley Joel-Osment, a new prototype robot / Respondent, which puts the technology in the limit, with a faint, almost invisible line between man and machine. Would we be nearing the end of the differences that separate beings powered by oils, cables and chips than we are.

By placing the boy / robot in a family house, shaken by the terminal illness of his son in an attempt to make David come to fill the void left by the child, a situation arises from the most delicate. The amazing recovery of the sick child becomes unbearable environment for parents and children. David is extremely devoted parents and constantly sabotaged by the "brother", jealous, who wants to get rid of it. The strenuous situation ends tragically for the robot, abandoned in a world full of problems and inequalities.

The greenhouse effect, the corruption of manners and misunderstanding reign of men in that century. The boy robot pilgrim through this world and tries at all costs, understand what the fence in search of his home, his parents and security with which he was accustomed. You like him and other replicants, human beings much like their "parents" and never suspect that among them there could be an approximation (could not understand the neglect that was submitted). It humiliated, put in situations that was very close to destruction and continues believing in redemption (and their parents back home).

At that point we began to ask ourselves: There must be limits to science? By creating transgenic foods, clones or robots that think and feel (like in the movie), the science does not endanger the existence of humans? Who gave us the right to alter the nature through experiments such as those mentioned above or others not mentioned? Repercussions that may arise from changes so great as these? The technology, whatever it is, is it really necessary? What will happen to us if we keep progressing the way we are?

The world clearly divided between those who support science and enthusiasm in their projects, those who believe that certain developments are valid and others not and those who reject most of the implements brought by the researchers. It is not about choosing one of these options but, above all, to create a channel discussions involving civil society, scientists and governments of the countries to which the ethical issue is not forgotten. For the fairness prevails among the people who head these changes and that in any moment what is being created can, in the near future, cause harm to humanity.

Do not brake or stop means being made by science, but consider other factors (not just technical) and the social, the political, cultural and economic aspects related to these experiments.
For schools, "AI" may represent the beginning of discussions and studies in this area, involving biology, history, geography, ethics, the study of updates ...
